MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday gave San Juan City a 100-percent rating in its road clearing drive.

“From what I saw, 100 percent,” MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos told reporters after he and Mayor Francis Zamora rode bicycles to inspect roads and sidewalks in San Juan to check if the city complied with the national government’s directive to rid roads of obstructions.

Abalos and Zamora toured city hall, N. Domingo street, Ortigas Avenue, the Greenhills Shopping Center loop and Club Filipino Avenue.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in 2019 gave San Juan a perfect rating for its road clearing initiatives.

Zamora, for his part, is hopeful they will achieve the same assessment from the DILG even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also stressed the importance of bicycles as public transportation remains limited during the pandemic.

“We are experiencing a biking revolution since the pandemic started. The pandemic showed the importance of bike lanes because it promotes a healthy lifestyle and you can distance yourself from people during commutes,” Zamora said in a statement.
