Fiscal: Witness testimony vs De Lima solid

Robertzon Ramirez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The testimony of a state witness against detained Sen. Leila de Lima remains solid despite cross-examination by her lawyers last week, a government prosecutor said yesterday.

Provincial Prosecutor Ramoncito Ocampo Jr. said De Lima’s lawyers attempted to destroy the testimony and credibility of Joel Capones as state witness during the hearing at the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 256.

Capones claimed he handed over P1.4 million in drug money to convicted bank robber Jaybee Sebastian, who later handed the cash to De Lima, who was then justice secretary, for her senatorial campaign.

Ocampo said Capones’ testimony was clear and categorical.

Ocampo said that Capones is subject to a redirect examination once De Lima’s camp completes its cross-examination when the trial resumes on April 16.
