Philippines deports Dutch missionary
MANILA, Philippines — The Dutch missionary whose permanent resident visa was revoked by the government for allegedly joining protest rallies has been deported, Malacañang announced on Wednesday.
Otto Rudolf De Vries has proven himself to be an undesirable alien by joining protest actions, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said.
“He was deported for joining rallies, which according to our immigration law is prohibited,” Roque said. “But he can still rally in The Netherlands.”
The Church People – Workers Solidarity had opposed the deportation of De Vries, saying it was based on “false accusation that he was joining rallies of front organizations of terrorist groups.”
“Organizing workers’ unions and educating them about their rights are not acts of terrorism,” the group said.
The immigration bureau defended its decision to cancel De Vries’ permanent resident visa, saying foreigners are prohibited from engaging in partisan political activities.
