ERC action sought on looming Romblon island power crisis
MANILA, Philippines — The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has been asked to settle a looming power crisis on Tablas Island in Romblon.
The ERC should immediately act on the notice of Suweco Tablas Energy Corp. (STEC), the lone power supplier on the island, that it would scale down its operations starting Monday, Romblon Rep. Eleandro Madrona said.
STEC said it accumulated losses amounting to hundreds of millions in pesos due to certain orders of the ERC.
“I understand that the combination of the decisions of the ERC in charging solar rate for diesel in excess of the generation mix and computing the generation mix on a monthly basis led to the losses of STEC,” Madrona said.
He said the ERC should protect both consumers and investors.
Madrona said a power crisis on the island would be “embarrassing,” noting that President Duterte had just inaugurated STEC’s solar power plant in August 2019.
