Catanduanes governor, Leyte town mayor get COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Catanduanes Gov. Joseph Cua and his wife Nancy have tested positive for COVID-19.

Cua said he and his wife have mild symptoms. He assured his constituents that he would continue to work while on quarantine.

He said all his staff and family members yielded negative results in their antigen tests.

Cua said he had only minimal engagement in the past week as he was in his office most of the time.

In Leyte, Mayor Pelagio Tecson Jr. of Tanauan and his wife Penelope were also infected.

Tecson said he and his wife underwent swab tests after he experienced symptoms of the virus. The couple were isolated in a hospital.

“All our close contacts have been identified and will undergo testing,” he said.

Tecson had earlier banned gatherings to prevent local transmission of the virus, including the more contagious new variant.

In Negros Occidental, provincial administrator Rayfrando Diaz said two more returning overseas Filipino workers would be charged with falsification of public documents and violation of health protocols for misdeclaring themselves as locally stranded individuals (LSIs).

Diaz said the two are residents of Sagay and Cadiz, who came from Saudi Arabia and falsified their quarantine certificates.

Three natives of Pontevedra, who arrived from United Kingdom are also facing charges for claiming they are LSIs.
