Comelec eyes longer registration hours

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is eyeing longer registration hours to encourage more people to register for the 2022 general elections.

Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said yesterday she would propose an extension of the registration hours for approval of the Comelec en banc.

Guanzon noted that the poll body is behind its target of four million new registrants.

The Comelec recorded 1,117,528 voter registrants as of Jan. 14.

Calabarzon posted the highest number of applicants with 167,709 followed by Central Luzon with 125,360 and Metro Manila with 117,011.

The Cordillera Autonomous Region logged the lowest number of registrants with 17,337 followed by Caraga with 34,051 and Eastern Visayas with 35,478.

Guanzon urged the public to register at local Comelec offices from Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Wear a face mask and shield and bring your own ballpen,” she said.

The poll body resumed the voter registration on Sept. 1, 2020. It will run until Sept. 30 this year.
