Fires break out in Quezon City, Manila

MANILA, Philippines — An elderly woman died when a fire broke out in Barangay Pasong Tamo, Quezon City yesterday.

Arson probers identified the fatality as Grace Juat, 63.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the blaze started at around 6:22 a.m. and reached the first alarm before it was put out by firefighters after more than an hour.

Arson investigators said they have yet to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed P50,000 worth of property.

At least 16 fire trucks, including six from volunteer groups, responded to the scene.

In Manila, around 40 families were left homeless after a fire that struck a slum area at Baseco Compound, Port Area before dawn yesterday.
