MNLF declares Abu Sayyaf persona non grata

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines — The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has strengthened its resolve to prevent terrorists from seeking refuge in its areas as it signed a covenant with the police, military and municipal government of Kalingalang Caluang town in Sulu declaring Abu Sayyaf bandits as persona non grata.

Col. Hernanie Songano, 4th Marine Brigade commander, said the Marine Battalion Landing Team 7 led by Lt. Col. Eduard Olaso met with MNLF base commanders under Ali Julkipli for the signing of the covenant to prevent the bandits from hiding in MNLF areas.

The military said Abu Sayyaf bandits usually take refuge near MNLF camps and communities in a bid to draw the MNLF into the conflict and delay pursuit operations by government troopers.

It was observed that due to family ties, some Abu Sayyaf leaders and members get access to communities and MNLF areas.

Songano said the covenant is a clear manifestation that the MNLF shares the resolve of the military to maintain  peace and order in Kalingalan Caluang.
