BACOLOD CITY , Philippines — The municipality of EB Magalona in Negros Occidental has declared a state of calamity due to flashfloods spawned by heavy rains on Jan. 9.

Mayor Marvin Malacon said yesterday the Municipal Risk Reduction and Management Council approved the declaration, which was adopted by the town council on Jan. 12.

The cities of Silay, Talisay and Victorias, which were hit by flashfloods twice in a week, had earlier been placed under a state of calamity.

Malacon said 13 of the 23 barangays in EB Magalona were hit by flashfloods on Jan. 9. At least 3,339 families or 16,690 individuals were affected. Damage to agriculture and infrastructure was placed at P9 million.

He said the flashfloods were due to heavily silted waterways, including the Malogo, Imbang and Tabigue Rivers.
