MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte’s chief legal counsel yesterday expressed confidence that newly appointed Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. would succeed in his post.

Salvador Panelo said Abalos would bring with him “years of experience” and “wisdom” to the bureaucracy, noting that the new MMDA chief was a former councilor, lawmaker and mayor of Mandaluyong City.

“Definitely, he is qualified and capable to continue the good works of the late Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim,” Panelo said. “With public service in his DNA, Chairman Benhur Abalos will lead the MMDA to greater heights.”

Abalos replaced Lim, who died after suffering a heart attack on Jan. 6, over a week after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Abalos was scheduled to take his oath of office yesterday.

He served as Mandaluyong mayor from 1998 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2016. He represented the city in Congress from 2004 to 2007.

Abalos’ father, Benjamin Sr., was a former chairman of the MMDA and the Commission on Elections.
