Laoag may revert to MECQ
TUGUEGARAO, Philippines — The local government of Laoag is planning to revert the city to modified enhance community quarantine (MECQ) after its COVID cases hit more than 100 yesterday.
The city recorded 97 active cases on Saturday, forcing Mayor Michael Keon to warn of a possible return to MECQ should the situation persist.
Yesterday, the city health office logged another 29 new infections, bringing the total number of active cases to 126.
Laoag was placed under MECQ by Ilocos Norte Gov. Matthew Manotoc on Nov. 27, following a surge of cases. It was reverted to MGCQ on Christmas Day.
From 16 active cases during the MGCQ, the figure surged again after 22 butchers contracted the virus.
The city health office attributed the rise of the cases to the continuous mass testing being undertaken at the city public market.
