No foul play in NBI counterterror chief’s death
MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday said that the death of its counterterrorism division chief was due to “accidental firing.”
NBI Director Eric Distor said results of an investigation by the bureau’s Death Investigation Division showed that Raul Manguerra was alone in his office and “could have been cleaning his gun when it fired at past 11 p.m. Monday.”
Manguerra, 49, was found with a gunshot wound in the abdomen minutes after his colleagues heard a gunshot coming from his office, according to initial reports.
A source told The STAR that the official was suffering from Stage 3 colon cancer but continued to work in spite of the pain.
