NGCP boosts Metro Manila transmission service
MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has increased its transmission service in Metro Manila as it energized the San Jose-Quezon 230kV Line 3.
The NGCP said the new transmission line is in anticipation of increasing power supply and demand in the coming years.
The NGCP said it was able to energize the line despite the setbacks encountered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We recognize the importance of ensuring reliable power transmission services at all times, especially at the height of a global health threat where hospitals and other critical facilities require uninterrupted delivery of power,” the grid operator said.
The 19-kilometer San Jose-Quezon Line 3 traverses the cities of Quezon, Caloocan, Valenzuela and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
It widens the power transmission corridor, allowing all available and incoming supply from power plants to transmit to the country’s load center.
It will also prevent the overloading of transmission lines currently serving Metro Manila, as well as provide N-1 contingency for the line.
The N-1 component, as set by the Philippine Grid Code, is the ability of the grid to withstand a major system disturbance with minimal disruption to the system.
The new transmission line project is part of the P1.64-billion Energy Regulatory Commission-approved program, which includes the upgrade and expansion of NGCP’s San Jose and Quezon 230-kilovolt (kV) substations.
The NGCP is a Filipino-led, privately owned company in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s power grid, led by majority shareholders and vice chairman of the board Henry Sy Jr. and co-vice chairman Robert Coyiuto Jr.
