Ex-peace consultant arrested in Misamis

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY , Philippines —  A former peace consultant  was arrested in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental on Friday.?

Police said Alfredo Mapano, 67, an employee of the government-managed Phividec Industrial Authority was arrested based on a warrant for robbery issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 7 Judge Hector Salise.

Mapano, said to be a former New People’s Army leader,  was detained on various charges for seven years at the Misamis Oriental provincial jail.

He was released on bail in 2016 and served as peace consultant for the National Democratic Front.

Mapano participated in peace talks between the government and communist rebels until President Duterte canceled the negotiations in 2017.

His wife Chona questioned the arrest, saying Mapano surrendered to the President following the collapse of the peace talks.                                                  –
