MANILA, Philippines — Commercial fishing is banned in the Visayan Sea for three months.

The waters in Northern Iloilo – Barotac Nuevo, Anilao, Banate, Barotac Viejo, Ajuy, Concepcion, San Dionisio, Batad, Estancia, Balasan and Carles towns and parts of Capiz, including Roxas City, Pilar, Pontevedra, President Roxas and Panay are covered by the fishing ban.
Commercial fishing is also banned in the waters off the coast of EB Magalona, Victorias City, Manapla, Sagay City, Cadiz City and Escalante City as well as Bantayan Island in Central Visayas.
Species not permitted for catching, selling and buying during the ban are sardines and herrings (tamban, tabagak, tamban-tuloy, balantiong) and mackerels (hasa-hasa, gumaa, bulao, alumahan).
The closed fishing season aims to protect sardines and mackerels during their peak spawning season and manage and restore commercially-important species.
