MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has deployed a rescue team and equipment to assist in the rescue operations in Cagayan, an MMDA official said yesterday.

Mike Salalima, MMDA public safety officer, said the agency deployed a team composed of 30 rescue personnel as well as two speed boats and several rubber boats to Cagayan, which was inundated by Typhoon Ulysses.

The rescue team was augmented by members of the Metro Manila Emergency Volunteer Corps, according to Salalima, who also heads the MMDA’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Salalima said the MMDA rescuers encountered difficulty in entering Cagayan due to damaged roads.

The agency also deployed a team and equipment to help in the clearing operations in Marikina and Rizal province.

The MMDA sent heavy equipment to bulldoze mud on the roads before flushing it away, as well as dump trucks to collect the debris, Salalima said.

Meanwhile, Salalima said Metro Manila’s 64 pumping stations would undergo preventive maintenance after operating for successive weeks due to Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.
