Cet Dematera - The Philippine Star

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — Three earthquakes shook Cataingan, Masbate yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the first temblor, with magnitude 3.9 occurred at around 8:10 a.m.

Seven minutes later, a magnitude 3.0 quake was recorded 28 kilometers west of Cataingan.

After six hours, a magnitude 2.2 temblor was recorded 19 kilometers south of Cataingan.

On Aug. 18, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake jolted Masbate and other areas in Bicol and the Visayas, leaving a retired police officer dead and 24 others injured.

The temblor was recorded seven kilometers southeast of Cataingan, where it was felt at Intensity 7, which is classified by the Phivolcs as “destructive.”

Dozens of aftershocks were recorded in Masbate in the past months.

The Phivolcs said the quakes were caused by movement along the Philippine Fault Zone-Masbate segment.
