MANILA, Philippines — A two-year-old boy died when a fire broke out at a residential area in Las Piñas City on Monday night.

Authorities identified the fatality as Steven Escueta.

The child’s mother, Stephanie Escueta, and three others suffered second degree burns, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Arson investigators said the fire razed the victims’ house at the Lopez Compound at around 9:26 p.m.

Four other houses were destroyed by the fire, which reached the second alarm before it was contained at around 10:21 p.m.

Damage to property was estimated at P200,000.

Authorities said they have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

In Mandaluyong, at least 25 families were left homeless when a fire struck Barangay Hagdang Bato Itaas on Monday.

The fire started at the house of Ma. Christina Cubalan, 23, the BFP said.

No one was reported injured in the incident.

Cubalan was taken into police custody for questioning.

Arson probers said they were investigating if Cubalan intentionally set her house on fire.

The displaced residents are taking shelter at a covered basketball court in the barangay.

Mayor Carmelita Abalos sent partition tents for the evacuees to ensure that physical distancing measures are observed. – Emmanuel Tupas
