Vico: Scholars owe nothing to pols

MANILA, Philippines — Scholars should never feel that they owe their free education to politicians, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto said on Friday.

During an online general assembly with the city’s scholars, saying they should never thank him for the free education they are getting.

“Laging tandaan na wala tayong utang na loob kahit kanino lalo na sa politiko dahil pera ito ng taumbayan (Always remember that you do not owe anyone, particularly politicians, because it is the people’s money),” he said in a post on Facebook.

While he appreciates students thanking him, Sotto admitted feeling awkward as the money being used to fund their education did not come from his own pocket.

If he wants anything in return from the students, the local chief executive said it is for them to do well in their studies.

“Mag-aral lang kayo nang mabuti at sulit na ang investment ng lungsod sa inyo,” Sotto said.

The Pasig City government is funding the education of around 18,200 students in the city.
