Trucks barricade NLEX toll plaza
SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — At least 150 trucks barricaded the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) toll plaza in this province yesterday morning in protest of the ban on 12 and 14-wheeler trucks along the expressway.
Traffic was snarled for two hours at the toll gates in this city, San Simon, Mexico, Floridablanca, Porac, Angeles City, Dau, Mabiga and Sta. Ines, according to the office of Gov. Dennis Pineda.
Pineda said the truck drivers lifted the barricade, which was set up at 6:30 a.m., after he assured leaders of the Porac Truckers and Haulers Association (PTHA) that he would take up their concerns with the national government.
The PTHA has around 2,000 haulers of gravel and sand from Mt. Pinatubo in Porac.
Representatives of NLEX Corp. also conducted a dialogue with the truck drivers.
“NLEX Corp. decided to ban quarry trucks without consulting local government units,” Pineda said.
He also cited reports that heavier trucks were allowed entry in exchange for P1,000.
Pineda said sand and gravel haulers told him that they reduced the sidings of their trucks to comply with the allowable load on NLEX. – Ramon Efren Lazaro
