Fighting cock’s gaff kills town cop chief
TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — The police chief of San Jose, Northern Samar died after he was hit by a gaff locally known as tari of a gamecock that he confiscated during an illegal cockfighting raid in Barangay Mandugang on Monday.
Lt. Christian Bolok was hit in his left thigh, which cut his femoral artery, according to a police report.
Bolok was declared dead on arrival at the Northern Samar Provincial Hospital.
Fighting cock gaffs are said to be usually laced with poison.
Police said Bolok initiated the raid after receiving reports on the holding of an illegal cockfight in the area.
Seven fighting cocks and P550 in bet money were reportedly recovered from six persons arrested in the police operation.
The ban on cockfighting in the province remains in effect.
Four cockfighting aficionados tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 last month.
