ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two alleged Abu Sayyaf bomb experts who escaped from their detention cell were killed in an encounter with Army troopers in Isabela, Basilan on Sunday.

Nurhasan Lahaman and Battuh Kusain Murah of Sumisip and Tuburan towns, respectively, were tagged in an attack in Lamitan City in 2018.

The fatalities were among the eight inmates who allegedly killed jail guard Asbi Florencio Salih during a jailbreak on Oct. 13.

Two fugitives were immediately recaptured by pursuing soldiers.

Lahaman and Murah reportedly opened fire at the Army’s 4th Special Force Battalion who tracked them down in Barangay Cabunbata.

A firefight ensued, resulting in the death of the fugitives, according to Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., Western Mindanao Command chief.

Soldiers recovered from the fugitives a rifle, pistol and ammunition.
