Binay seeks furlough for detained HR activist
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Nancy Binay yesterday called for the release of detainee Reina Mae Nasino to allow her to visit the wake of her three-month-old baby.
“I ask jail authorities to grant her temporary freedom so she could be with her baby for the last time,” Binay said.
On Friday night, Nasino’s baby died of acute respiratory distress syndrome at the intensive care unit of the Philippine General Hospital.
Nasino gave birth on July 1 at the Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, eight months following her arrest.
A Manila court has denied Nasino’s petition to take care of her baby while in detention.
Nasino is detained at the Manila city jail female dormitory on charges of illegal possession of firearms.
She is one of the three human rights activists who were arrested in Manila in November last year.
