Fire halts LRT-2 operations
MANILA, Philippines — The operations of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) were suspended for over nine hours yesterday when a fire hit one of its closed stations.
The LRT-2 halted trips after a fire struck the electrical room of the Santolan station at past 5 a.m.
Hernando Cabrera, spokesman for the Light Rail Transit Authority, said the fire damaged the station’s uninterruptible power supply or UPS, which serves as link of the signaling system between the control center at the Santolan depot in Pasig and the entire LRT-2 line.
Cabrera said eight LRT-2 stations from Recto in Manila to Cubao, Quezon City were affected by the closure.
The LRT-2 resumed trips at around 2:20 p.m.
Cabrera said they have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
The Santolan station along with Anonas and Katipunan stations has been non-operational since October last year after a fire damaged the train line’s power rectifiers and railway tracks.
