Quezon City shuts down 2 online lechon sellers
QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Quezon City government reminded the public yesterday to be cautious in buying meat products online after it discovered unsanitary practices of lechon or roasted pig sellers operating without permits.
City veterinarian Ana Marie Cabel said they shut down the two businesses for illegally selling lechon online.
“They sell illegally slaughtered meat, meaning the facility is not registered,” Cabel said. “There were no meat inspectors to check if the meat is fit for human consumption.”
The owners and location of the businesses have yet to be released. But photos provided by the city government showed the unsanitary areas where the lechon were being cooked.
Cabel asked consumers to be vigilant when buying meat products, especially from online sellers amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Buying fresh meat and processed food must always pass inspection to determine if these are fit for human consumption,” she said.
“Always ask for inspection certificates from online sellers because all meat products should have undergone inspection,” she added.
Cabel said meat products in markets and groceries in Quezon City, including imported and frozen items are undergoing strict inspection to ensure that these are safe for consumption.
