5 hurt in Samar roadside bombing, gun attack
TACLOBAN CITY , Philippines — Two teachers and a police officer were among five persons who were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off as their vehicles passed along the highway in Barangay Tagbayaon in Jiabong, Samar yesterday.
Suspected New People’s Army rebels who detonated the explosives also reportedly fired at the occupants of the vehicles, triggering a brief firefight with personnel of the Pinabacdao police.
The wounded police officer, Pat. Ace Denver Aharuddin, 24, suffered three gunshot wounds. He is now in stable condition in a hospital.
Lt. Col. Maria Bella Rentuaya, Eastern Visayas police spokesperson, said police officers were escorting a man accused of arson when the incident occurred.
The wounded civilians were in a passenger van traveling ahead of the police vehicle.
Meanwhile, the remains of Cpl. Nestor Turla and Pfc. Renato Cabreros reported missing six years ago were found buried in a shallow grave in Palapag, Northern Samar on Monday.
Rebel returnees, who said they witnessed when the two soldiers were kidnapped then executed by their former comrades, led government troopers to the site. – Emmanuel Tupas
