MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Manila Development Authority has suspended its Pasig River ferry service due to the proliferation of water hyacinths, the MMDA said yesterday.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the MMDA said the service would be suspended “until further notice” because the water hyacinths clogged the river and resulted in problems that prevented the boats from operating properly.

The MMDA said it used trash skimmers, boats and traps to clean up the river but they are “not enough” to contain the water hyacinths’ growth during the rainy season.

The suspension came just barely a week after the MMDA resumed the ferry service on Sept. 28 for authorized persons outside residence.

In August, the ferry service was also opened for healthcare workers and government employees.

The government suspended all modes of public transport in March after imposing a community quarantine to curb the spread of COVID-19.
