Quake shakes Luzon

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-5.6 earthquake rattled parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, at dawn yesterday.

State seismologists said there were no reports of damage, but they warned of possible aftershocks.

The quake occurred at 2:16 a.m., with its epicenter located 31 kilometers southeast of Looc, Occidental Mindoro, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It was felt at Intensity 4 in Looc, Lubang, Mamburao, Paluan and Sablayan, all in Occidental Mindoro, and Tagaytay City.

Intensity 2 was felt in Malabon, Makati, Mandaluyong, Muntinlupa, Pasig and Quezon City.

Earthquakes of Intensities 4 and 2 are classified by Phivolcs as moderately strong and slightly felt, respectively.

Instrumental Intensity 4 was recorded in Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro; Intensity 3 in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro and Roxas, Oriental Mindoro; Intensity 2 in Bacoor and Carmona, both in Cavite; Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, both in Metro Manila; Calumpit and Plaridel, both in Bulacan, and Dolores in Quezon province.

The temblor was registered at Instrumental Intensity 1 in Marikina, Quezon City and San Juan, all in Metro Manila; Guagua in Pampanga; Gumaca and Mauban, both in Quezon province; Marilao and San Rafael, both in Bulacan, and Talisay in Batangas.

Instrumental Intensity refers to the ground shaking as detected by seismic instruments.

The quake was tectonic in origin, Phivolcs said.
