Ludong fishing season closed
BAGUIO CITY MANILA, Philippines — Authorities are watching the Abra River and its tributaries to prevent anyone from catching Ludong fish.
This developed after the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)declared closed the fishing season for Ludong, to allow the fish to spawn.
The Abra River is among five major river systems that nurture Ludong, the most expensive fish in the country.
Dubbed by Ilocanos as the “President’s Fish,” Ludong costs P4,000 to P5,000 per kilo.
Ludong fishing is declared closed from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15 of every year based on an administrative circular issued in 2013.
“We are responsible for the strict monitoring of the closed fishing season of Ludong as the catch basin of the Abra River is located in Barangay Banaoang in Bantay town as well as in parts of Caoayan and Santa, and Vigan City, all in Ilocos Sur,” said Benny Saraos, provincial fishery regulatory officer.

“With the implementation of the closed season, we reaffirm our commitment in protecting and preserving the fish and the rivers for future generations to enjoy,” Saraos said.
The BFAR is working closely with the fisherfolk, local government units and other government agencies in conserving and saving the Ludong fish, BFAR director Eduardo Gongona said.
