Fire hits fuel plant in Batangas

MANILA, Philippines — A fire of unknown origin broke out at the JG Summit Petrochemical Complex in Batangas City on Saturday night.

The first alarm was raised at 9:05 p.m. and the fire was declared out at 11:55 p.m., according to a statement issued by JG Summit.

The incident occurred at the plant’s containment basin located near the port area in Barangay Simlong.

The blaze did not reach the main manufacturing site.

Workers were immediately evacuated while those injured, mostly contractors, were taken to the Jesus of Nazareth Hospital for treatment.

A team from JG Summit along with firefighters from the city’s Bureau of Fire Protection and risk reduction management office as well as volunteers from the nearby KEPCO Ilijan Power Plant and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. Tabangao Oil Refinery responded to contain the blaze.

An onvestigation is ongoing.
