Quake jolts Surigao Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-5.7 earthquake jolted the town of Bayabas in Surigao del Sur yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake was not expected to cause damage, but Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks.

The center of the temblor, which occurred at 6:13 a.m., was located 87 kilometers northeast of Bayabas.

It was felt at Intensity 4 in Bayabas, and Intensity 3 in Tago, Surigao del Sur and Claver in Surigao del Norte.

Intensity 2 was recorded in Tandag, Carmen and Cagwait, all in Surigao del Sur, and Intensity 1 in Hinatuan.

Meanwhile, a magnitude-4.9 quake occurred 24 km northwest of Claveria in Cagayan at 1:47 a.m.

It was felt at Intensity 4 in Claveria and Sanchez Mira; Calanasan in Apayao, and in Adams, Bangui and Pagudpud, all in Ilocos Norte.

Another magnitude-3.7 earthquake occurred in Albuera, Leyte at 9:49 a.m.

The epicenter of the temblor was located 13 kilometers northeast of Albuera.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Ormoc and Intensity 2 in Dagami, both in Leyte.
