Rudy Santos, Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Two Filipinos who survived the sinking of a cattle ship off the Japan coast arrived yesterday from Osaka.

M/V Gulf Livestock 1’s chief officer Eduardo Serrano and crewman Jaynel Rosales arrived on board a Philippine Airlines flight, according to the Manila International Airport Authority.

The Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Japan gave the two seafarers $200 each and a bag of clothes.

The remains of Joel Cañete, another crewman on the Panamanian-flagged ship, was sent to his family in General Santos City last week.

Authorities said 36 Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australians remain missing.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) personnel received the two Filipinos upon their arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport shortly before 6 p.m.

The DFA said the search continues for the mainly Filipino crew of the sunken vessel, but there are no further developments to date.
