San Juan bike patrollers get body cameras

MANILA, Philippines — The San Juan government has equipped local police officers with body cameras to boost the implementation of health protocols while on bicycle patrols, Mayor Francis Zamora said yesterday.

Police officers have begun doing bike patrols around dedicated lanes and narrow streets to accost those violating quarantine measures, including the ban on spitting and sneezing in public places.

“Body cameras are important because the police would not only look out for those violating the bike lanes, but also ordinances on wearing of face masks and shields,” Zamora told reporters.

At least 30 policemen assigned for bike patrols were issued body cameras to record videos or take photos to prevent false accusations against violators and enforcers.

Body cameras were also distributed to local officials implementing health measures against COVID-19.

Police bike patrollers were also tasked to make sure that cyclists are safe while using the bicycle and motorcycle lanes along a portion of Ortigas Avenue.

The city government opened yesterday the third lane of the highway for bikes and e-scooters. A speed limit of 25 kilometers per hour must be observed. Adjacent to the lane is a lane dedicated to motorcycle riders.

“Since it’s the day one of the modified bike and motorcycle lanes, we will observe the flow first. We will give people the chance to learn the regulations,” Zamora said.
