MPD drug detainee dies

MANILA, Philippines — A drug detainee died on Tuesday after suffering high fever and shortness of breath while in the custody of the Manila Police District (MPD) Station 7.

Arnel Cruz, 59, was rushed to the Tondo Medical Center on Saturday.

Police arrested Cruz on drug charges on Aug. 19.

Swab samples were taken from Cruz to determine if he died of COVID-19, the MPD said.

Police said all detainees at the MPD Station 7 underwent swab tests.
