MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is eyeing the mega drug treatment and rehabilitation center in Nueva Ecija as a detention facility.

PNP chief Gen. Camilo Cascolan urged the Department of Justice to consider their proposal in a bid to decongest jails and prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.

“Kung hindi naman ginagamit, baka puwede ilagay doon yung ibang preso to be guarded by the PNP,” Cascolan said.

The 25-hectare drug rehabilitation facility at Fort Magsaysay, which opened in November 2016, can accommodate 10,000 people.

It is unclear how many drug users are undergoing treatment at the facility.
