MANILA, Philippines — The Archdiocese of Manila will allow physical confession in all churches under its jurisdiction during the coming weeks, more than six months since physical gatherings for religious activities were prohibited.

Bishop Broderick Pabillo, the archdiocese’s apostolic administrator, said the faithful must “make an appointment in the parish office for confession and the priests will readily accommodate you. Confession cannot be done online. It has to be done personally.”

“So I invite all to take time to receive this sacrament in the coming weeks,” he added.

The cities of Manila, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati and Pasay are under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Manila.

To ensure the safety of the faithful, Pabillo instructed parishes to set aside time for confession and to make provisions for places for confessions that are hygienically safe for both the priest and the penitent.

Pabillo said the faithful have missed the “Kumpisalan ng Bayan” during Lent as the government imposed enhanced community quarantine on Metro Manila, prohibiting mass gatherings.
