BOC hit over P20.7 billion collection shortfall

Elizabeth Marcelo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Audit (COA) has scolded the Bureau of Customs (BOC) over its P20.763-billion collection shortfall last year, citing poor monitoring of importers’ unpaid tariff obligations, slow disposition of overstaying cargoes and failure to auction off perishable goods.

In its annual audit report, the COA noted that from January to December 2019, the BOC posted a total collection of P640.282 billion, more than three percent short of its P661.044-billion target.

The audit body said the collection shortfall would “affect the financing plan of the government for the implementation of nationwide programs.”

State auditors noted that while nine ports have exceeded their collection targets, their surpluses were negated by the deficits of eight poor-performing ports.
