MPD detainee allegedly dies of COVID-19
MANILA, Philippines — A 55-year-old detainee of the Manila Police District (MPD) Station 9 reportedly succumbed to coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 at the Ospital ng Maynila yesterday morning.
Enrique Ungria was taken to the hospital on Aug. 24 after he complained of severe diarrhea and vomiting, according to MPD homicide investigator M/Sgt. Dennis Suba.
After undergoing medical examination, Ungria was confined in the hospital’s COVID-19 ward.
Police said he was diagnosed with a heart enlargement and died of complications secondary to COVID-19.
Ungria did not show any symptoms of the virus after he was apprehended on drug charges on Aug. 18, MPD Station 9 commander Lt. Col. Ruben Ramos said.
MPD director Brig. Gen. Rolando Miranda ordered all detainees and police officers who had close contact with Ungria to undergo rapid tests.
Miranda said more than 200 detainees are being held at the detention facility of the MPD Station 9, which can only accommodate 30 people.
A rapid testing of the inmates and police personnel is needed to prevent the spread of the virus, he said.
