Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Two Chinese citizens kidnapped by their compatriots were rescued in Las Piñas City, the police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) said yesterday.

AKG director Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo said Jiang Xiao Hao and Li Weizu were rescued during an entrapment at BF Resort Village in Barangay Talon Dos at around 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Weng Shiting and Cheng Guo were arrested and charged with kidnapping before the Department of Justice in Manila on Monday.

The victims were kidnapped on Aug, 7. The suspects demanded 80,000 renminbi from their families in exchange for their freedom.

According to Estomo, the suspects convinced their victims to invest in an online currency exchange scheme with a promise of higher rates, then kidnapped them after gaining their trust.

The suspects are detained at the AKG head office at Camp Crame in Quezon City.
