Ex-general’s son wounded in attack

Raymund Catindig - The Philippine Star

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Philippines  – A son of a retired police general and his relative were wounded in a gun attack in Barangay Pantar Sur, Balaoan, La Union on Thursday.

Police said Peter Ronald Obaldo, 33, son of former police official Pedro Obaldo Jr., was in a sport utility vehicle in a two-vehicle convoy with Rommel Paguirigan, 35, when they were waylaid.

One of the two motorcycles used by the suspects fell into a ravine, but the gunmen managed to escape.

Probers are eyeing politics as the motive for the killing.

The elder Obaldo ran but lost in the 2019 mayoral elections in Balaoan against his relative Aleli Concepcion.

Concepcion was wounded while her father Alfred, the vice mayor, was killed in an ambush in 2018.
