Village chief shot dead

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A barangay captain was shot dead by a motorcycle-riding assailant in Ibaan, Batangas on Friday.

Senon Portugal, president of the Association of Barangay Captains, was in his car when he was killed at around 3 p.m. in Barangay Poblacion.

Portugal was declared dead on arrival at the Queen Mary Hospital.

Police have yet to determine the motive for the killing.

Meanwhile, a police chief and his security aide survived an ambush in Taytay, Palawan yesterday morning.

Capt. Erwin Hernandez, chief of the Taytay police, and Cpl. Mark Russel Soniel Evangelista were in a patrol car on their way to nearby Roxas town when a group of men waylaid them at around 6:10 a.m. in Barangay Abongan, according to Lt. Col Imelda Tolentino, spokesperson for the Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) police.

Probers said the attack could be job-related.
