MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National  Police (PNP) has filed charges against the widow of a retired police officer for allegedly stealing P530,000 in monthly pension.

PNP chief Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa said yesterday criminal charges were filed on July 2 against Lucilla de Mesa before the Quezon City prosecutor’s office.

Gamboa said De Mesa did not report to the PNP that her husband, retired S/Sgt. Fortunato de Mesa, died on Feb. 18, 2019 and has withdrawn P535,355.93  in accumulated monthly pension after his death.

“The monthly pension was supposed to stop in March 2019,” he said in a statement.

Gamboa is pushing for stiffer penalties on fake pension claimants.
