DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines — Pork supply in Luzon is down by up to 40 percent due to the African swine fever (ASF).

Rosendo So, Samahan ng Industriyang Agrikultura chairman, told a virtual forum of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Pangasinan chapter yesterday that around 350 sows died in Luzon, which represents around 380,000 hogs per month.

“At an average of 65 kilos per head, it means about 24.7 million kilos had been lost in Luzon,” So said.

He said the supply of pork is expected to worsen in August, noting that many piggery owners had stopped raising swine.

So said the deficit could be augmented by supply from Mindanao. However, he said the arrival of goods is notregular.

He said the country could not also import from ASF-hit countries, adding that freight fees remain high.

So said the Visayas and Mindanao are the nearest alternative sources of pork. He said buyers also prefer fresh pork meat.
