El Nido not reopening to tourists yet
MANILA, Philippines — The reopening of El Nido to tourists may be deferred.
The municipal government may delay the issuance of an executive order allowing residents of Palawan to visit the town due to rising coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 cases, local tourism officer Arvin Acosta told The STAR yesterday.
The Department of Health said there is still no confirmed case in El Nido, but Palawan has recorded 11 cases. Six of the patients are in Puerto Princesa City.
Acosta said stranded tourists could still wander around the town, adding that two hotels were given authority to operate by the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said the DOT is talking with officials of Baguio City and El Nido on their planned reopening.
Puyat expressed confidence that the tourism industry would bounce back despite the enforcement of quarantine protocols.
“Tourism stakeholders share the desire and determination of the nation’s labor force to get back to work as we embrace the new normal,” she said.
