Belmonte probes PWD card scam
MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has ordered an investigation on the reported issuance of persons with disability (PWD) identification cards to unqualified individuals.
Belmonte said she personally looked into the records of the city’s Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office after photos of PWD discount cards issued to six members of a well-off family went viral on social media.
She said there were no application forms and supporting documents on record to justify the issuance of the PWD discount cards, which happened during the previous administration.
“It is alarming that the law that should benefit PWDs are being abused by those who want to take advantage of others,” Belmonte said. “Abuse by the rich and powerful at the expense of the handicapped and less fortunate will never be tolerated in Quezon City.”
The mayor ordered a review of the official list of PWDs in the city to make sure that only those qualified under the law would get a 20-percent discount and other privileges.
