MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the ambush of Mohammad Sangki, a state witness in the Maguindanao massacre.

In a department order signed by DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra, NBI officer-in-charge Eric Distor was directed to lead the investigation on the ambush and file charges against those behind it.

“Distor is hereby directed to submit reports on the progress of the subject investigation and case buildup directly to the Office of the Secretary within 10 days,” the order read.

The ambush in Tantangan, South Cotabato on Wednesday resulted in the killing of security officer Richard Escobilla.

Sangki was injured when their vehicle rammed an eatery when the driver lost control of the wheel when they were attacked.

The victims were on their way to the airport from Tacurong City when the incident occurred.
