Lanao Sur mayor wounded, wife killed in CDO ambush
MANILA, Philippines — A town mayor in Lanao del Sur was wounded while his wife was killed in an ambush in Cagayan de Oro City yesterday.
Mayor Somerado Guro, 60, of Lumbaca Unayan town; his wife Rohaifa, 26, and his nephew Abdul Rafi, 19, were in a Toyota Hilux on their way home when they were attacked by unidentified motorcycle-riding men, Maj. Aldren Baculio, Police Station 7 chief, said.
Although wounded, the driver of the pickup, Ibrahim Dayanlabi Gani, 58, managed to escape and drove to the Polymedic Plaza Hospital, where the victims were treated.
Abdul was unhurt.
Probers recovered nine bullet shells for a caliber .45 pistol at the scene.
Maj. Ivan Viñas, spokesman for the Cagayan de Oro police, said city police chief Col. Henry Dampal ordered pursuit operations for the gunmen.
Initial investigation showed the gunmen tailed the vehicle of the victims and opened fire when it reached a two-way street in Zone 2.
