Palace condemns NPA attacks in Misamis
MANILA, Philippines — The government yesterday denounced the burning of houses and a chapel by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in Misamis Oriental.
Four houses and a church of an evangelical group were torched by the guerrillas in Opol town on Thursday, police said.
No one was hurt in the attacks, which police said may have been intended to divert the attention of security forces away from the fleeing rebels.
“To commit such crimes at a time when the country is reeling from the pandemic is callous and inhumane,” presidential communications Secretary Martin Andanar said.
He described the attacks as disturbing and unforgivable.
“We assure the residents and the public that the government will exhaust all means to capture and punish those who committed this atrocity,” Andanar, cabinet officer for Northern Mindanao development and security, said.
