4 streets in Caloocan under lockdown

MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Caloocan yesterday placed four streets in Barangay 28 under total lockdown amid the increasing number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, Mayor Oscar Malapitan said.

Dagat-Dagatan Avenue as well as Kawal, Landaska and Kamada streets would be under lockdown until May 31.

There were 28 cases of COVID-19 in Barangay 28, Malapitan said.

Barangay 28 is the third village in the city to be put on lockdown. The first was Barangay 156 in Bagong Barrio.

The lockdown in Barangay 12, which posted 49 COVID-19 infections, was extended until May 30.

A resident in the area, Rommel Martinez, lamented the lack of time given by city hall for them to prepare for the extended lockdown.

“People here would not die of COVID-19. They would die of hunger,” Martinez said.

He said the residents have not received the P1,000 cash aid promised by the mayor.

The lockdown in Barangay 12 was originally scheduled from May 17 to 23.

Tondo hospital reopens

The Ospital ng Tondo in Manila yesterday resumed operations after it was closed for two weeks for disinfection after 13 medical staff were infected with COVID-19.

Reports said three of the health workers have recovered from the disease. The others are still undergoing quarantine.

Mayor Isko Moreno had placed the Sampaloc hospital and Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center under lockdown after their personnel were infected with the virus.

Meanwhile, Greenhills shopping center is set to reopen its tiangge area in June after modifying the physical layout of the stalls in compliance with social distancing measures, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said.

Zamora inspected the shopping complex yesterday.

He clarified that the shopping center is open except for the tiangge area. Shoppers without face masks will not be allowed to enter the mall.

Taguig virus count climbs

In Taguig, 11 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded on Sunday, bringing to 399 the total number of people infected with the virus, including 21 deaths and 76 recoveries.

The last time Taguig posted a double-digit increase in COVID-19 infections was on May 20.

Barangay Fort Bonifacio registered the most number of COVID-19 cases at 56.
