MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Cynthia Villar apologized yesterday for her remark regarding members of the middle class receiving emergency cash assistance from the government.

Villar, during the Senate Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, noted the confusion in the distribution of the social amelioration program (SAP) subsidy, which is supposed to be for the poor and those who lost their jobs.

She said some members of the middle class received cash aid while those without jobs have yet to benefit from the SAP.

Villar said her statement was “not in any manner meant to be an affront to the hardworking middle class.”

“I might have framed my statement in such as manner that I was insensitive to the plight of the middle class sector. I look out for the welfare of the middle income workers. If I have offended anyone, I humbly apologize,” Villar said in a statement.
